Everyone in the room can point at Larry
Ask at a certain kind of party and somebody answers without thinking about it: that one, by the window, with the silver. Nobody in that room has a problem and nobody is comparing anything. Of the men standing in it, all but one have an opinion about hair. The one who has never offered his is the one they point at.
Somebody in this room gets pointed at. It is never the one doing the talking.
What the rest of the room does
The room is not idle. It has tried things.
One of them started something in the spring and had stopped it by June. One has a cabinet, a schedule and a system, and will describe all three to anybody who slows down. One booked an appointment and did not go. One says the whole business is vanity, then checks the back of his head in the hall mirror on the way out. Between them they have been through more products in ten years than Larry has been through bottles.
And they talk. In that room, talking about it is the loudest activity available and the least useful one. It is also, oddly, the only part of the whole business that anybody is any good at.
The difference is not what. It is where.
Everything the room does happens on hair, and hair that can be seen is finished work.
It was made under the skin months ago, and nothing worked along its length changes what it was made of. There is exactly one part of a head that is still in production tonight, and it is the skin the hair comes out of.
That is where Larry's two minutes go. About a millilitre of a botanical oil, worked into the skin under the hair on damp hair after a shower, three to five times a week. Nine ingredients, and all nine are printed on the label. Jojoba is close enough to what the skin already makes that the blend goes in instead of sitting on top of it. Rosemary and peppermint move the blood at the root. Castor and batana are heavy and stay for hours. Coconut goes into the fibre itself. Vitamin E keeps the blend from turning.
An oil does not decide everything about a head of hair. What it reaches is the surface the hair is made on, and that surface is either kept in condition or it is not. In that room it is the one variable still open, and it is the one nobody is attending to.
Two or three minutes, on damp hair, and then the day starts.
The room, and Larry
| The rest of the room | Larry | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | On the hair, which was finished months ago | On the skin the hair comes out of |
| How old the habit is | New since the spring, and the one before it is in a cupboard | The same thing since his fifties |
| What it takes | A cabinet, a schedule and a system | Two or three minutes, three to five times a week |
| What it asks of him | Something swallowed, or an appointment and a waiting room | Neither |
| Where it is kept | On a shelf, in view, part of the conversation | In a drawer, next to the watch |
| What he says about it | A great deal, at length, to anyone | Nothing |
βThe guy at the club asked what I was doing differently. I said nothing. Thatβs the review.β
Peter L., 63
βTwo drops in the morning, thatβs the whole routine. My barber asked what Iβd changed after about a month. I told him nothing, which is the point.β
Martin K., 58
βThe change was gradual: more shine first, then a bit of strength when I comb it. Nothing dramatic. I donβt want dramatic; I want to look like myself on the other side of a red-eye.β
Henry W., 70
The last row is the one this page loses
A page like this one is, by a wide margin, the loudest thing that has ever happened to that bottle. Larry did not write it and would not have. He got the bottle the way these things actually move between men who are not going to discuss them: a name, a nod in a corridor, no explanation offered and none asked for.
Which is a pleasant system for the men already inside it and a useless one for everybody else, because a nod in a corridor does not reach a man who was not in the corridor. So here is the explanation Larry was never going to give, once, in writing, and then it can go back in the drawer.
Where it lives. Nobody has ever asked what it is.
The entire distribution channel, and the reason you have not heard of it.
Why the rest of the room stopped
Ask any of them why the thing they started in the spring is in the back of a cupboard now, and the answer is the same one every time: they could not tell whether it was doing anything, and they got tired of not being able to tell. That is a fair reason to quit, and it is the reason an oil has to be honest about its clock.
The first of it is on the surface, and the surface is quick.
More shine, more softness, better body. Those tend to show somewhere between the fourth and the sixth week, which is soon enough to know that something is happening and far too soon to make it a topic. Anything tied to the pace hair is made at moves at the pace hair is made at, and no oil shortens that.
90 DAYS. IF IT DIDN'T WORK, THE MONEY COMES BACK. NOTHING GOES BACK TO US.
That leaves the better part of the 90 days to decide with rather than to wait through, and you keep the bottle either way. It is not a small number on the other side of this page and it was never meant to be. Men who ask about that number in a room like Larryβs are usually not asking about the number.
βYouβre looking for Larry. Thatβs him, over there.β
That sentence gets said about somebody in rooms like that one every week. It is never said about the man who explains himself.
Larry is sixty-something. He has the hair he had at fifty, he has never once brought it up, and the only thing he has ever done about it is a couple of minutes on damp hair after a shower, three to five times a week, since before anybody started asking him.
Tonight the skin under a manβs hair is either being kept in condition or it is not, and that part is not decided by a room. The nine ingredients, the label and the number are one click away.
