VALEVA Golden Oil

Everything this oil will not do for you

Seven items, written by the people who make it, printed before anything else on this page. Whatever is still standing at the end of the list is the only thing we are selling.

  1. It does not bring anything back.

Where the hair has already gone, it has gone, and nothing in this bottle argues with that. No oil that has ever been sold argues with it either, whatever the front of the carton is doing.

  2. It is not a medicine.

It is a cosmetic oil. It goes on the scalp, which is skin, and it works on the surface it can reach. That is the whole of where it is, and the whole of where it is meant to be.

  3. There is no trial with our name on it.

Nobody has run a study on this finished formula. The place on this page where that would go is empty, and we are not going to fill it with somebody else's paper about one ingredient and let you assume it was ours.

  4. It does not go faster because you want it to.

Shine and softness sit on the outside of the hair, so they turn up in four to six weeks. Anything tied to the hair's own cycle runs eight to twelve, and no bottle shortens a cycle.

  5. It does not replace anything a doctor gives you.

If a doctor is already involved in your hair, this is not that conversation and it is not a substitute for one. We are not the second opinion.

  6. There is no before and after photograph.

There is not going to be one. A picture of a man who looks the same is a picture of nothing, and most of the pairs you have been shown are two lightings and a comb.

  7. It does not smell of nothing.

Peppermint, for about a minute after it goes on, and then it is gone. If what you want is a fragrance, buy a fragrance.

Read that list again and notice what every line costs us. Seven reasons not to buy, on the page a man lands on before he has spent anything, put there by the seller. There is no version of that which is good salesmanship.

We print it because the reason you cannot tell one bottle from another on that shelf is not that they are all the same. It is that each one prints only the half of the account that helps it.

One column filled in, the other left blank, on every carton in the row. And with nothing in the second column there is nothing to weigh, so the decision falls back onto the front of the box, which is the one part of the product designed by somebody whose entire job was to get you to pick it up.

A man of about sixty in a plain kitchen, pouring coffee. His hair is thick and mostly grey and his hairline is visible from temple to temple. Morning light comes in from a window behind him.
Nothing in this photograph is a result. That is the honest kind, and on this page it is the only kind on offer.

You have bought into this category before. Not often and not carelessly: once on somebody's recommendation, once because the packaging was serious enough to be believable. Both times you gave it about five weeks. Both times nothing happened that you could point to, and both times the entire loss was yours to carry, because nobody on the other end had put anything at risk.

That is not a complaint about oils. It is a description of what happens when only one column is ever printed. So here is ours.

I approach a new product the way I approach a new investment: assume it will underperform until proven otherwise. [...] I almost didn't need the guarantee. Around week five the difference was visible to me, and by week eight it was visible to everyone else. I've renewed the subscription.

Eight oils and a vitamin E, on the outside

Every one of them stays where you put it. The jojoba is close enough to the oil your own skin already makes that the blend settles in rather than sitting on top of it. Castor and batana are heavy, so they are still there hours after a lighter oil has gone. Coconut goes into the fibre and slows the protein leaving it. Rosemary and peppermint are what you smell for the first minute, and item seven is the whole of what we are going to claim for them. The vitamin E is there so the blend does not turn.

Same shine, same softness, same weight next year

A scalp in condition is the only reason that happens, and condition is a surface property: dry or not dry, tight or not tight, and you can tell by running a hand over it. The rest of it you read off the comb. That is the entire argument. It is a modest one, and it is the only one that survived the list at the top of this page.

The VALEVA Golden Oil bottle standing open on a light oak counter, its dropper laid down on a used linen cloth, with water marks drying on the wood around it.
A couple of drops on the scalp, worked in for two or three minutes, three to five times a week, on damp hair after a shower. There is no protocol and nothing to learn.

Some men read a list like the one at the top of this page and close the tab, and that is a reasonable thing to do with it. Others read it and settle, because forty years of being sold to has taught them that a seller who volunteers the unhelpful half is either careless or has done the arithmetic.

We have done the arithmetic. A man who was told plainly what the thing would not do has nothing to feel misled about in week five, which is the week every other bottle in your cupboard died in.

I have been skeptical of oils since the 1980s, when they were sold to me as a cure for everything. This one makes no such promises, which is exactly why I kept using it. The hair looks the way it did a decade ago, not better, just maintained.

Douglas R., 67

Both of them wrote their own lines. We cut them for length and changed nothing else, and they are the only two on this page because they are the two who said what this page says.

What is left to decide

Whether a scalp oil that has told you seven times what it will not do is worth the term printed above, given that nothing is at stake for you and the date is carried on our side of it.

Nothing on this page starts while you think it over. The unit in this business is the year, and the year runs either way: the only question is whether there is a bottle on the shelf in your bathroom while it does.
