VALEVA Golden Oil
Five words in the promise. Three in the term.
Every bottle on that shelf makes a promise. Ours is five words long. The money-back term printed underneath it is three words long, and they are not the same three. What fell off the list between them is the whole of this page.
The promise, five words
- shine
- softness
- colour
- density
- growth rate
The term, three words
- more shine
- more softness
- better body
Two words are on both lists. Three fell off. One was added, and it is the one you settle with a hand.
A promise and a term are two different kinds of sentence, and the difference is money. A promise is what the seller hopes happens to you. A term is what the seller has agreed to pay if it does not, which means a term can only be written in things that can actually be settled. Watch the filter work on our own five words.
Density is settled by counting, and no man counts his own head. Even if he did, he would have nothing to count against, because he cannot run this year twice, once with the bottle in the bathroom and once without it. Growth rate is the same problem holding a ruler. Colour moves so slowly that the only available witness is your memory of yourself a year ago, and memory is a friendly witness.
Shine, softness and body are settled in a morning, by a man with a window and a hand. No instrument, nothing to learn, nobody to ask. So those are the three the money sits on, and the other three are not sold to you here at all.
Which is also, and this is the part worth stopping on, why the two previous bottles in your cabinet died in week five.
They were sold to you in a unit you had no way to audit. Something was supposed to be happening, somewhere you could not see it, at a speed nobody would put a number on, and by week five you could not tell the difference between a thing working slowly and a thing doing nothing whatsoever. From the outside those two are identical. So you stopped, and you were not even disappointed, because disappointment needs a result to attach itself to. You quit not knowing, and the conclusion you drew was that the whole category is theatre, when what had actually happened is that nobody had given you a way to check.
I fly twice a week, and cabin air is brutal on everything it touches. I started this about six weeks ago, mostly for the dryness. The change was gradual: more shine first, then a bit of strength when I comb it. Nothing dramatic. I don't want dramatic; I want to look like myself on the other side of a red-eye.
Henry W., 70
Forty years on a stage will teach you that the lights are unforgiving. Dull hair under a spotlight reads as tired, and I was tired of reading that way. This changed the texture within a month: not the color, not the length, just the quality of it. I look like myself again, which is all a woman of my age should ask for.
Margaret S., 65
Neither of those two counted anything. Both noticed something and then named which thing it was, in the ordinary words anyone uses at a bathroom mirror. That is the register this product is sold in, and it is the register the term is written in, and there is nothing underneath either of them that only a laboratory could reach.
Where it goes, which is a fact rather than a claim
Eight botanical oils and a vitamin E. They go on the scalp, which is skin, and they work on the surface they can reach, and that is the whole of where they are. Jojoba is close enough to the oil your own skin already makes that the blend settles in instead of sitting on top of it. Castor and batana are heavy, so they are still there hours after a lighter oil has gone. Coconut goes into the fibre and slows the protein leaving it, and protein leaving the fibre is what dull and brittle are made of. The vitamin E is there so the blend does not turn. Peppermint is what you smell for about a minute, and that is the last thing we are going to say about it.
When the three words turn up, and why the dates differ
Four to six weeks. Shine, softness and body sit on the outside of the fibre, so they do not have to wait for anything biological to come around, which is exactly why they are the three that can carry a term. The term itself runs 90 days. A man who travels, or who skips a week in March, should not lose the argument on a technicality, so the date is set well past the point where the three words either turned up or did not. By the time the 90 days are up you will have had a month and a half of knowing, which is the thing you have never once been given by a bottle on that shelf.
What is left to decide
Whether three words you can settle by yourself, with a date on them and somebody else's money behind them, is a better basis for a purchase than five words you would have to take on faith. You already know your own answer to that. It is the same answer you apply to everything else you buy.
Nothing on this page starts while you think it over. The unit in this business is the year, and the year runs either way. The only variable is whether there is a bottle in the bathroom while it does.
