VALEVA An open letter Golden Oil

Not one bottle on that counter goes where the hair is made

To the woman who already owns the good version of everything.

The beauty hall of a department store at opening time, empty, morning light down a long pale marble counter lined with unbranded jars and cartons
Ten in the morning, before anyone is in it. Every container on that marble is for the part of the hair that has already grown.

People keep asking us what wealthy women actually buy for their hair, and we cannot answer that the way it deserves to be answered. We do not know who buys this. We know what arrives in our inbox after a month or two and we know what gets ordered again, and that is the whole of what we know.

So we went and looked at the other end of it: at what those women already own. Walk a beauty hall early, before the lights are all on. Pick any one counter and read it. There is nothing on it that is not for the length.

The counter is dressed for the part that is already finished

Shampoo goes on and comes off in the same four minutes. Conditioner is kept away from the roots, which is what the instruction on the back says and what every hairdresser in the world does with it. Serums, creams, glosses, the small expensive bottle a stylist hands over at the till: all of them go on the length, because the length is what a woman can see and hold while she is deciding.

The length is finished work. It grew months ago, in conditions that are over. It can be cut, coloured, smoothed and made to shine for a week, and none of that reaches back and changes how it grew. It cannot be made a second time.

Hair is made in one place and worn everywhere else. The inch nearest the skin is the only part still being made this month. Everything past it is a record of a season that already happened.

Two women the same age, a decade apart

Neither of them found a better bottle. The ground underneath made their hair in different condition, month after month, and that ground covers the one square foot nothing on the counter has ever been to.

The hall lies to nobody. It sells to the part a customer can hold, which runs a shop well and keeps a head of hair badly. Nothing you own belongs in the bin. It all just points at the same end of the strand.

Seen from directly above, a woman's own hands opening a parting at her crown in damp hair, the line of skin visible along the part
Damp, after the shower, the parting open. This takes two or three minutes and it is the only step of the morning that goes to the ground rather than to the length.

What we made instead, and where it goes

Golden Oil is not for the length. It goes on the skin of the head, on damp hair after the shower, about 1 ml over a whole head, worked in for two or three minutes, three to five times a week. Some people leave it in daily instead. Both modes are on the label and neither is the exception.

Nine ingredients, chosen for what they physically do inside the mixture. Jojoba sits close to what the skin already makes, so the blend goes in instead of staying on top. Castor and batana are the heavy ones and they stay for hours. Rosemary and peppermint are the thin cool ones, and they are the part a person feels arrive. Coconut, olive and avocado carry the rest of it. Vitamin E keeps the mixture from oxidising in the bottle.

That is the entire mechanism. It makes no medical claim. It is chosen by where it goes, not by what it promises once it gets there.

The third week is where most bottles stop

Somewhere in the house there is a drawer with two or three bottles in it that were abandoned in the third week, and every one of them was abandoned for the same reason. Nothing had happened yet, and there was no way of telling whether nothing was going to keep happening.

Shine, softness and body are surface changes and they show at four to six weeks. That is longer than anybody's patience, so the terms are written to outlast it.

90 days. If it didn't work, the money comes back. Nothing goes back to us. The bottle stays with you, open, however much is left in it. There is nothing to pack, nothing to post and nobody to convince.

Three letters, and not one of them is about the oil

These came in by email from customers who gave us permission to print them, word for word. Read them for the shape rather than the verdict. Not one of the three is telling you the oil works. Each one is telling you who noticed.

I want it to look cared for without looking done. This oil does exactly that: a little in the morning, and by evening it looks as though I’d spent an hour on it, which I hadn’t. My hairdresser has noticed, and her opinion is the only one I’ve ever trusted on the subject.

Catherine H., 58

My colorist asked what I’d changed when I came in for my last appointment; the color is holding longer between sessions and the hair has a sheen to it that I hadn’t had in years.

Eleanor V., 62

The oil itself does what it says: the shine holds through a week of fittings and travel, and my stylist has stopped suggesting I try something new. That’s the highest compliment she knows how to give.

It lives where it is used, not where it is displayed. This is the whole of the routine that the counter never sold anybody.

Why this one arrives by post

A counter has to be paid for. The floor, the lighting, the person standing at it and the brand's share of the hall are all inside the price of whatever is sitting on that marble, and none of it is inside the bottle. We have never put ours on one. It comes from us, in the post, and the women who buy it say the number the way you say the time.

Keep everything on your shelf. It is all for the length and most of it does that well. This is for the other end of the strand, the end that is still being made, and there was never anything on that counter competing for it.

VALEVA This letter is from the people who make it. There is nobody else to hear it from, because it has never been on a counter and there is no salesperson standing next to it.
