Three American men between fifty five and seventy standing talking on a bright harbour promenade in a wealthy coastal town at midday, seen from behind and three quarters away, linen jackets, thick silver hair.

Ask this group which one of them has the most money and they will argue about it all afternoon.

The group never agrees on who is richest

Put six men of the same age around a table and ask which of them has the most money. You get six answers and an argument. Ask the same six which one is aging slowest and the table picks one man in about a second, with no discussion at all, and then talks about something else. Nobody says out loud what they were looking at.

What they were looking at is the subject below. The questions are the ones men send us, in roughly the order they arrive. The answers set in the larger type are lines from letters customers wrote to us, printed word for word and published with their permission. Where an answer is ours, it says so.

What is the table actually looking at?
VALEVA

Hair, and almost nothing else. By sixty a face has stopped sorting men by the year. It sorts them into a band about fifteen years wide and every man at the table is somewhere inside it, which is why the money question has no answer and the age question has one. Hair sorts instantly. Dense, well kept hair at the crown reads as a decade the man has not lived yet, and it is read before anybody has decided to read it.

There is nothing wrong with my hair. Why would I start now?
β€œI’m not losing hair. I wanted to keep what I have, and most of this category is selling me a problem I don’t have. Two drops in the morning, that’s the whole routine.” Martin K., 58

That is the entire audience for this page. Men with nothing to fix, who intend to still have this in ten years and would rather not find out the hard way which of the two decisions was the expensive one.

Fine. What does the man they picked actually do?
VALEVA

About a millilitre of a botanical oil on damp hair after the shower, worked into the skin under the hair for two or three minutes, three to five times a week. Some men leave it in daily instead. Nine ingredients, and all nine are printed on the label of a small glass bottle.

Here is the only argument on this page. Everything visible on a man’s head is finished work: it was made underneath weeks ago, and nothing done along its length changes what it was made of. The one part of the head still in production tonight is the scalp. That is where the two or three minutes go, and there is no second argument. A page that offers you a second one is selling the second one.

The back of the head and shoulder of a man of about sixty five in bright daylight against a pale stone wall, short thick silver hair dense across the crown, no face visible.

This is the whole of what a table reads in a second, and none of them could tell you they were reading it.

Does anybody actually notice?
β€œThe guy at the club asked what I was doing differently. I said nothing. That’s the review.” Peter L., 63

And that is the whole of the traffic on this subject between men: a compliment with a question mark stuck on the end, answered in one word, and then the conversation moves. Pleasant for the man who already has the bottle on his shelf and no use at all to anybody else. It is why this page had to be paid for.

How long before I would know?
β€œI fly twice a week, and cabin air is brutal on everything it touches. I started this about six weeks ago, mostly for the dryness. The change was gradual: more shine first, then a bit of strength when I comb it. Nothing dramatic. I don’t want dramatic; I want to look like myself on the other side of a red-eye.” Henry W., 70

Shine, softness and body sit on the surface and move first, commonly between the fourth and the sixth week. Anything tied to the pace hair is made at keeps that pace, and no oil shortens it. Whoever tells you otherwise is selling you the calendar, not the bottle.

I quit the last one. It went greasy on the pillow.
β€œI’ve tried two other scalp oils before this one. The first made my pillowcase greasy by the second night. I quit that one fast, and I don’t make that mistake twice. This one soaks in; my pillowcase is clean by morning.” James T., 61
And if it does nothing for me?
VALEVA

90 DAYS. IF IT DIDN'T WORK, THE MONEY COMES BACK. NOTHING GOES BACK TO US.

The bottle stays on your shelf either way, with whatever is left in it. And since the surface moves around the fourth to the sixth week, most of those 90 days sit on the deciding side of the line instead of the waiting side. That is deliberate: a promise you cannot reach in time is a promise built not to be used.

It is not the low end of the shelf.
β€œThird bottle in, on the subscription. The sixth one arrives free, and there’s a specialist assigned to me who called in month two, not to sell anything, just to ask how it was going. I’ve had better service from banks. The oil itself: two drops, no smell that follows me around the office, hair looks like it did five years ago. I’m not changing anything.” Andrew M., 57

No, it is not. The number sits on the other side of this page, next to the nine ingredients, which is where a man who reads both should meet it.

The VALEVA Golden Oil bottle standing uncapped on a marble bathroom shelf in morning light, its glass dropper resting beside it on a used white towel, water marks on the stone.

Nine ingredients, two or three minutes, three to five times a week. This is the whole of the routine the table was reading.

Next spring’s hair is made tonight

Not along the visible length of it, which is finished and cannot be argued with, but underneath, at the pace it has always been made. That part is either being kept in condition tonight or it is not, and it is the one variable in this entire business that a man can still act on before he goes to bed.

Two or three minutes, three to five times a week, to keep what is already good. The label, the nine ingredients and the number are one click away.

Nobody at that table is keeping a secret. They are keeping a routine.
